How to Create Real Relationships
Create relationships with top-tier media people using this method
Would you like to know an effective way to create real relationships with top-tier media contacts? It's really quite simple. Just follow what Darrell Gurney, the Career Guy, did back in 2008.
What did he do? He invited top media people to answer questions via free teleseminars he hosted for his customers (now you’d use podcasts or Zoom calls). In one episode, he interviewed Joyce Lain Kennedy, the top syndicated columnist on careers at the time (and author of a ton of bestselling books). Her Careers Now column was syndicated in over 100 newspapers.
In doing the interview, she benefited from the additional exposure Darrell provided her via the teleseminar (both for her column and her books). And he benefited by creating a relationship with a top media person (who ended up writing the forward for one of his books), while he also gained additional credibility with his potential customers by featuring such a prominent media person. That's a win-win for everyone.
Prior to Darrell’s interview, Joyce asked people via her social media and her column to send in questions by going to her website. Thus, besides the exposure from the teleseminar itself, she also encouraged lots of people to visit her website and encouraged them to sign up as well for her email newsletter. She told her readers and followers about the upcoming teleseminar as well so Darrell also benefited from that extra exposure.
These two smart authors worked together to create real value for their audience while also exposing more readers to their work and their books. You can do the same by interviewing key influencers and media people via your podcast or Zoom meetings.
