Read magazines. They are full of story ideas. For example, the rest of this article is based on the current issue of Real Simple magazine.
Share a simple story. Every issue of Real Simple magazine features a simple story from one of its readers. They ask readers: Let’s look for meaningful moments in our lives and share them here. Tag your Instagram posts with the hashtag #simplestory and alert the editor of Real Simple on Instagram by tagging her name @LizVaccariello. She features her favorite story every issue.
Share things about your home. In the current issue of Real Simple magazine, the editor shared 3 Things About My Home That Delight Me: The word “tuba” typed on a P-touch label (to welcome home her daughter, who started playing tuba in the fifth grade), a handwritten note from the Easter Bunny, and the unfinished photo wall outside her bedroom. What do you have in your home that delights you? Write a story about it, or just comment here.
Answer a question. For example, what’s your most unusual quarantine recipe? Here’s how a few Real Simple staffers answered that question: a Tater Tot casserole, a black bean spread, salad with popcorn, mac & cheese with hot sauce, kitchen sink cookies, and leftovers salad.
Share a good book. Every Wednesday on Instagram, Real Simple editors suggest good books to read: beach novels, biographies, classic reads. Why not start your own recommendation series for books to read, TV shows or movies to watch, games to play, recipes to cook?
What is the best gift you ever received? Answer that question with a great story about the gift, the giver, and your response to that gift. In Real Simple, the answer to this question was tickets to Les Misérables for an 11-year-old girl.
What is an item you can’t live without? And, of course, tell us why that item is so indispensable.
Share relationship tips.Real Simple featured stories from five women who insisted on change in how chores and other responsibilities were shared in their home. Some couples came up with creative solutions.
Answer questions. Invite your readers to ask you questions. In most cases, it would be best to specialize in one subject or field. For example, anyone reading this story can ask me a question about writing, publishing, and/or marketing books. Ask your question in the comments below.
